What colour should the mother of the bride wear?

We all know that, as a bride, your wedding day is supposed to be the best day of your life. But if you’re the bride's mother, then the day is likely to be just as important to you. Being the mother of the bride is such an honour and for that reason you want to ensure you make the right outfit choice.

We all know that you shouldn’t wear white to a wedding (unless it's your big day!), so what colour should the mother of the bride wear? You will likely be full of excitement and anticipation on the big day and, while you don’t want to upstage the bride, you want to feel great too.

You may even find that as mother of the bride you have some responsibilities to carry out on the day, such as helping the bride get ready or even giving her away! So it is super important that you have an outfit that is comfortable and that you can feel confident in.

Well, here at NADINE MERABI, we’ve put together some of the most elegant mother of the bride dresses for the slew of events that happen on The Big Day. From dresses to pantsuits, we’ve got it all.

Purple is a great option

It can be difficult to know where to start when looking for the perfect mother of the bride outfit. But one of the first things you might consider is the colour. While you want to stand out from the crowd, you may not feel comfortable going fully out there with a bright colour, such as pink or yellow.

Therefore, the style experts at NADINE MERABI recommend that you go for a purple palette. You can feel super comfortable in this rich palette and it is versatile too because  a variety of shades look great together.

For example, the MICHAELA Purple Jumpsuit is the perfect option for a spring or summer wedding. It is a lovely purple colour that also shows off a brightly coloured embroidered sheer base top. This is great if you don’t feel like wearing a dress for the big day and instead want to go for something a bit different.

Simply pair this with some block wedges that you find comfortable to walk in and you’ll be able to celebrate all night long.

Go for nudes or pastel colours

If you’re struggling to find the right colour for your mother of the bride outfit, then a safe choice is always a nude or pastel colour. While you need to ensure that you don’t go for anything too pale or close to the colour white (for obvious reasons), you can still go for any other pastel colour.

For example, the OLIVIA Mint Green dress is another great option for a mother of the bride outfit. Not only does the soft mint green colour look classy and sophisticated, with the lace trim around the waistline and bodice, but it also cinches in your waist and adds an extra level to the look. The pleated skirt features layers so that you can enjoy a full skirt, and is fully satin lined - providing you with the perfect silhouette.

There are so many different accessories that can go with this outfit too. A pair of heels or wedges will match well. However, we’d recommend popping a pair of flats in your bag in case your feet get sore after a few hours. This dress also comes in a baby pink blush colour.

Make sure you stand out from the bridesmaids

When it comes to finding the perfect outfit and trying to work out what colour the mother of the bride should wear, you may be tempted to go for the same colour as the bridesmaids. The truth is that the mother of the bride can wear any colour she likes, and doesn’t need to match the bridesmaids or wedding party at all. In fact, we recommend against it.

Of course, you want to stand out, but also look like part of the wedding party. Therefore, you may decide to go for corresponding colours so you can create a cohesive look. You could check in with the bride and see what colours she’d rather you wear, but ultimately it is entirely up to you. Choose complimentary colours to whatever the bridesmaids are wearing.

Top Tip: if you’re worried about not standing out as the mother of the bride, then a hat or fascinator is always a great mother of the bride accessory!

Think about the weather and the venue

Many mothers of the bride forget to consider the impact of the weather and the wedding venue on the big day when choosing their outfits. While it doesn’t matter what colour you are wearing, it does matter that you’re comfortable and warm enough.

If it’s a winter wedding then a long-sleeved outfit (and a jacket) is a must. But if you think it is going to be a bit warmer, then you may want a more floaty and lightweight material.

Also, consider the type of venue that the big day is being held at. If the ceremony is being held outdoors then think about footwear and about clothing that could easily get dirty. Remember that you want your outfit to look great and last all day/night long!
