Laurie Arons: The Wedding Planner

Laurie Arons: The Wedding Planner

.
As summer is quickly approaching, we're all looking forward to relaxing in the sunshine. But for all those that are bride-to-be, this time requires serious planning. We spoke to celebrity wedding planner, Laurie Arons, who unveiled the secrets of her life as a wedding planner.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.
We are a high-end wedding and social event planning company based in San Francisco, specialising in multi-day event weekends throughout the Bay Area and in destinations around the world. Our point of distinction is our devotion to customer service, priding ourselves on being a loyal, trusted partner to our clients throughout the planning process. Though our team believes in precision planning and strict attention to detail, to clients and guests our events feel effortless and authentic - never forced,  overly contrived or overly designed.

How did you first get involved in the event/wedding planner industry?
Laurie Arons Special Events was founded in 1994, when the stars aligned in my professional life to take a risk and start my own planning business. I’ve had a lifelong passion for entertaining, fine dining and luxury design, not to mention a serious love of romantic comedies. Therefore venturing into the wedding planning world was a way to embrace all aspects of my personality and pursue a career path I truly love.  After 25 years in the business, I am just as passionate as ever.

How many Weddings have you been involved in planning?
I have planned hundreds of weddings in my career, most of which feature multiple days of events for an event-count over 1000.
.
Is it better for a bride to know exactly what she wants, or for them to be open-minded and flexible? How much should they trust you?
Brides who are open-minded and flexible end up having the most beautiful and special weddings, because they trust in their vendors to be creative and do what they do best.  We love clients who have a strong sense of who they are and what they like, then let their event team build upon that for something truly custom and spectacular.   Brides who think they know what they want from the start are often surprised how they evolve throughout the planning process.  Trusting the team you hire is imperative.
.
Whats the most memorable wedding you have been involved in planning and why?
A wedding I will never forget was an incredible 5-day destination wedding in Jackson Hole, WY for the most wonderful, generous and fun-loving clients. The bride and groom wanted their guests to experience all the beauty and adventure the area had to offer, so we facilitated a variety of private activities and excursions for guests throughout the weekend.  They then hosted four nights of dinners and parties, culminating in a wedding reception tent I will always be so proud of.  The combination of a great client, a talented vendor team, a stunning part of the country and a weekend of hard work is a highlight of my career.
.
When it comes to helping a bride find the perfect dress, what role do you play?
Finding a dress is such a personal experience, but we help them navigate the daunting process by recommending and booking appointments at the salons that best reflect their personal style and wedding venue.  We will also help provide input if the bride is deciding between two or three final looks, with an eye on what will feel most natural and comfortable in their wedding day setting.
.
.
Have you noticed any changing trends in the dresses brides are choosing over recent years?
For a long time, strapless dresses were 90% of the bridal market, but I’ve been so happy to see sleeves return to fashion over the last couple years.  These looks are so much more flattering and comfortable, not to mention stylish!
.
I'm sure you've seen your fair share of Bridezilla's. Do you have any stand out memories/ stories that you can share?
I never like to use the world Bridezilla - typically if someone is difficult to work with, it’s because they are experiencing stress in some area of their life that manifests itself in the wedding process.  My job as their planner is to mitigate their stress, and help them relax enough to enjoy their engagement and the planning process overall.

Can you give us a few quick fire tips for brides and grooms planning their wedding?
While it’s your day, weddings are actually important and historic events for your entire families.  Try to think about ways to honour your families and make the wedding an enjoyable experience for them too.
Always start with your guest list before making any major decisions. Knowing how many people are on your A-list will give you a sense of budget and the venues available to you that can accommodate. Watching your guest list climb once you are locked in can add a lot of stress.

I really recommend everyone hire a planner! There are lots of talented planners that can fit a variety of budgets, and having one is an insurance policy for your wedding - there will be someone experienced to handle unforeseen circumstances.
